A Christmas Newsletter: 2013

Dear loved ones,

Isn't it amazing to think that yet another year has come and gone? What a year it has been! The Richards family has so much to be thankful for this year, and it was truly a year filled with blessings. I'm sure many of you will recall from last year's letter that Ronnie and I have been working tirelessly towards completing the add on to the house. The neighbors continue to raise a stink about how we're encroaching on their property line. They say they will take us to court, and I say they're dirty, filthy hedonists who couldn't appreciate a good breakfast nook if you gave it to them!

Rose, our youngest, is in the middle of her first semester of college. We're so proud of her, and all of her accomplishments. Rose is studying computer sciences, and I hope to heaven she doesn't turn out like a Sheldon! LOL, as the young people are fond of saying. Robert, our oldest, is in his last year of law school. My dreams are finally coming true for him. Ronnie always said it was “borderline psychotic” to lock a child in a room with nothing but a TV, VCR, and tapes of Allie McBeal, but when we retire in luxury we'll see who the crazy one is!

I've been enjoying my first Christmas season as choir director down at church, it's most exciting as we've been working on our Christmas program for months. Rehearsals are going just fine, but that mean old Sheila Darnworth is giving me fits! Sheila keeps drowning everyone else out on “Silent Night.” It's SILENT night, Sheila! Not “Sheila Sings So Loud She Can Wake The Dead Night!” LOL! That's awfully fun to type out, I see why the young people enjoy it.

We're entering our house into the annual Christmas Parade of Homes contest. The winners get bragging rights, a full color photo on the front page of the paper, and a $200 gift card to Outback. Ronnie has been working non stop hanging all kinds of amazing lights and lawn decorations. This year I am determined that will be the winners, especially since Sheila's daughter moved in up the street.

As you can see it has been a busy and most exciting year! We're so very blessed and happy that we can share our joy with you, our dear friends and family. Soon our home will be filled with the joys of family and friends from near and far, and I hope yours will be too. We're not having too many over this year, only my cousin Sandra. Sandra, bless her heart, has had a difficult time this Christmas season. Sandra does a lot of work with the local animal rescue, and was a waver on their float in the parade. It all went fine until a donkey shoved her off it, and one of the wheels went over her leg. On the plus side, you'd be amazed how fast a Hoveround can go.

Especially if you're a young classic movie fan, something that I am, and something that it seems is growing in numbers every day. Red, White, and Blaine

In 1996 Christopher Guest returned to the mockumentary genre with his look at regional theater “Waiting for Guffman.” Guest, most famously, being one-third of the fictional rock band Spinal Tap in the perhaps the best mockumentary ever made, “This is Spinal Tap.” “Guffman” also kicks off the cycle of Christopher Guest directed mockumentaries. The films all using the same group of actors, and all written by Guest with Eugene Levy, both of whom also act in the films. Guest’s films are largely improved by the actors, with the written material serving as an outline for the film’s story. “Guffman” takes place in the fictional town of Blaine, Missouri—a small town that is celebrating its 150th anniversary. It's The Holiday Season

Now don't get huffy at me, but let's face it. Once Halloween is over, it's the Holiday season. The stores have cleared away the spooks and spiders, and the snow and evergreen begins to make it's appearance. Everyone bemoans over the fact that they forget about Thanksgiving, but what do you want to do? Walk into Target and buy a plastic pilgrim? Thanksgiving is the holiday that you celebrate at the supermarket, while freaking out over the coming tidal wave of family and expectations. On the first of the month, I found myself out and about running errands. One department store I visited was already playing Christmas music, trees and glittery snowflakes up all over the place. With the Halloween paraphernalia all marked down to the lowest price. The only stores where you're not bonked over the head with Christmas, would be those food and kitchen specialty stores.
