A Christmas Newsletter: 2013

Dear loved ones,

Isn't it amazing to think that yet another year has come and gone? What a year it has been! The Richards family has so much to be thankful for this year, and it was truly a year filled with blessings. I'm sure many of you will recall from last year's letter that Ronnie and I have been working tirelessly towards completing the add on to the house. The neighbors continue to raise a stink about how we're encroaching on their property line. They say they will take us to court, and I say they're dirty, filthy hedonists who couldn't appreciate a good breakfast nook if you gave it to them!

Rose, our youngest, is in the middle of her first semester of college. We're so proud of her, and all of her accomplishments. Rose is studying computer sciences, and I hope to heaven she doesn't turn out like a Sheldon! LOL, as the young people are fond of saying. Robert, our oldest, is in his last year of law school. My dreams are finally coming true for him. Ronnie always said it was “borderline psychotic” to lock a child in a room with nothing but a TV, VCR, and tapes of Allie McBeal, but when we retire in luxury we'll see who the crazy one is!

I've been enjoying my first Christmas season as choir director down at church, it's most exciting as we've been working on our Christmas program for months. Rehearsals are going just fine, but that mean old Sheila Darnworth is giving me fits! Sheila keeps drowning everyone else out on “Silent Night.” It's SILENT night, Sheila! Not “Sheila Sings So Loud She Can Wake The Dead Night!” LOL! That's awfully fun to type out, I see why the young people enjoy it.

We're entering our house into the annual Christmas Parade of Homes contest. The winners get bragging rights, a full color photo on the front page of the paper, and a $200 gift card to Outback. Ronnie has been working non stop hanging all kinds of amazing lights and lawn decorations. This year I am determined that will be the winners, especially since Sheila's daughter moved in up the street.

As you can see it has been a busy and most exciting year! We're so very blessed and happy that we can share our joy with you, our dear friends and family. Soon our home will be filled with the joys of family and friends from near and far, and I hope yours will be too. We're not having too many over this year, only my cousin Sandra. Sandra, bless her heart, has had a difficult time this Christmas season. Sandra does a lot of work with the local animal rescue, and was a waver on their float in the parade. It all went fine until a donkey shoved her off it, and one of the wheels went over her leg. On the plus side, you'd be amazed how fast a Hoveround can go.

The Strangest Movie I've Ever Seen

There are certain movies that defy description. Movies that are so strange, so bizarre, people would swear you were making them up, until you actually produced a copy of the film and showed it to them. There are movies in this world that were designed to be weird from the get go, but nothing is quite as weird as movie that wasn't designed that way. A movie that was made just as any other movie on the yearly slate for the studio. A movie that was made not as a strange B picture, but as a major A production, with a big name cast, a budget, and everything. Such a movie is MGM's 1971 picture Pretty Maids All in a Row . It is, without question, the weirdest movie I've ever seen. Pretty Maids All in a Row is such an odd movie, that I have a hard time trying to wrap my brain around it. Blood Cold Mysteries

If there is one bit of esoteric classic movie stuff that simply fascinates me, it’s the trilogy of films directed by veteran actor William Conrad—and all released in 1965. They’re the three of only four feature films directed by Conrad, who spent all of his other directorial adventures on the small screen. The late William Conrad was a famed actor, playing Matt Dillon on the original radio version of “Gunsmoke,” and coming to full pop culture fame on TV in “Cannon” & “Jake and The Fat Man.” For this writer, Conrad will always be immortal for being the narrator on “Rocky & Bullwinkle.”  The three films in question all were released by Warner Brothers—where Conrad had a production office it seems—and are: “Brainstorm,” “Two On A Guillotine,” and the film I’m going to talk about today, “My Blood Runs Cold.” One of the reasons I’m fascinated by these three films is my built in soft spot for 1960s, black and white horror fare with crazy, bombastic promotion.
